Top Causes of Impotence in Men

Impotence in men is the failure to achieve or maintain an erection during intercourse. Also termed as erectile dysfunction (ED), it may disrupt the physical and psychological well being of the individual and his partner. It is a treatable disease, the doctors may advise on taking prescription drugs such as Cialis (Tadalafil) or Viagra (Sildenafil) to treat impotence.

There may be a variety of causes why men may suffer from ED such as:

• Less blood supply 

One of the most common causes is the narrowing of the arteries, leading to less blood supplied to the penile tissue. Erection happens when sufficient blood is pumped and retained in that organ. If that is not the case, it may lead to partial erection or a dysfunction. 

• Diabetes

• Nerve injury

Injury in any form, whether it is a fractured pelvis, spinal cord injury or radiotherapy to the genital area may result in ED. 

• Leakage in veins

Veins carry blood away from the organs. If there is a venous leakage in the penile tissue, excess blood may outflow which may not help in retaining the blood require to get and maintain an erection. Although it is rare, it may be a possibility.

• Psychological causes

Anxiety, depression and stress may lead to ED. Usually this problem is only temporary. As the person gets back to a normal state of mind, the body part may start to function as before.  However, there may be a possibility that the person goes into further mental problems because of it. It is important to treat the psychological cause in this case; otherwise it would create cyclical problems. 

• Long distance cycling

For people who regularly cycle for long distance, impotence may be seen in them as cycling puts pressure on the nerves of that organ. 

• Side effects of certain drugs

Some drugs may have it as a side effect. It is important to speak to the healthcare provider about the possibility of impotency before starting any  medication.

• Hormonal
• Nerve disorders

Depending upon the symptoms, the doctors may start treatments. Unless prescribed, one should not start any medications otherwise it may lead to some serious side effects. Apart from these treatments and drugs, one may also need to do some alterations to their lifestyle to treat impotence.
